THE TREASURE ROOM

ONE LOOK WAS ENOUGH TO see that it was this cramped room that held the most magnificent treasures of the tomb………… opposite the door, leaning against the wall of the chamber was the most admirable monument I had even seen < canopic chest>, so beautiful it took ones breath away so much did it excite our admiration and wonderment> NOTE BY CARTER. This chamber, guarded by a statue of Anubis on his Naos set on a sledge, contained many chests and shrines holding splendid ritual statues in the effigy of TUTANKHAMUN, and other magnificent objects. Scattered around the chamber were a certain number of small model boats as well as a chariot…………

1- ANUBIS

The treasure room is guarded by a statue of Anubis on his naos set on a sledge. The naos is made of gilt wood in the shape of a pylon above which is set a majestic statue of the young dog, JACKAL GOD ANUBIS, black in colour like the resin that coats the corpses to preserve them.

2- THE CANOPIC CHEST SHRINE

In the centre of the East wall of the treasure room. When he first saw it Carter described it as < an unforgettable moment>. The shrine, surrounded by a canopy 1.98 m high , 1.53m long and 1.22 m wide is composed of four corner posts supporting a cornice surmounted by a frieze of Uraeus, inlaid with coloured glass and glazed pottery. Against the sides, the four sisters, the protecting Goddess, made of gilt wood ( ISIS, NEPHTHYS, NEITH, SELKIT )

3-THE CANOPIC VASE CHEST

The elegant canopic vase chest, made of veined calcite with its details enhanced in dark blue, is adorned with a plinth and mounted on a gilt wood sledge. The sloped roof is adorned on the front with the winged solar disc of HORUS of BEHDET. The body of the chest with sloping walls imitates the appearance of a sanctuary.

Sculpted in high relief, the four Goddesses are placed in the corner ISIS in the south-west………NEPHTHYS in the north-west…………SELKIT in the north-east…..NEITH in the south-east.

The canopic jars of the king are sculpted directly in the block of the chest. Each cavity contained a small coffin made of beaten gold containing viscera and bearing the name of the protective genie to whom the viscera within were confided. AMSET= the liver…. HAPI= lungs…..DOUAMOUTEF= the stomach…….QUEBEHSENOUF= the intestines….. They are the 4 sons of HORUS.
